This frantic party card game, which has a delightful mahjong twist, honors several cultures. A Canadian couple who were inspired by how their two grandmothers, who hailed from different countries and spoke different languages yet were close friends because of their shared love of mahjong, devised the game known as Not Your Ma’s Jong. The charming artwork in the game gives players a glimpse into the worlds of Nai Nai and Bubbie, representing their respective cultures and amusingly competitive friendship. Play in rounds as you compete to acquire the most cards and tokens. (Keep in mind that tokens are your lifeline; take care of them much like Nai Nai would a large pot of dumplings.) And even though your grandmother taught you not to steal, it’s part of the game to take your rivals’ cards!
Mahjong is where this quick-paced card game got its start. As you compete to collect three sets of three cards plus a pair while gaining and losing tokens, this game will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Grandmas of The Creators served as inspiration
Grandmas of the creators instantly realized they shared a passion for mahjong despite not speaking the same language when they first met. The makers were motivated by this to create a card game honoring the many cultural backgrounds of their families as well as the friendly competition between grandparents.
The cards, which feature anything from matzo ball soup to fortunate cats, are a reflection of the grandmas’ culture, personalities, and fun rivalry.
You can win a round by drawing or stealing your last card, but make sure you call “steal” when you take it! For the designated “Ma” player, the stakes are larger because they always win or lose twice as many tokens.
